Many pet stores have a reptile section that will include baby turtles as well as adult turtles and all of the supplies that you would need to start off with. Be warned though that the world of turtle ownership is not one without difficulty as there are many things to consider when buying one.


Research before finding turtles for sale

Pet store turtles are relatively well cared for but sometimes buying from a pet store can have its own set of problem. Many times the pet store will send the turtle home in a tiny bowl made for small beta fish. They are also often subjected to overcrowding which causes stress that can lead to early death of your turtle. Think about the type of turtle you want. There are a several breeds that you can choose from. Your standard, semi-aquatic turtle seems to be the most popular.

Most pet shops will have a bunch of these guys that you can choose from. And, of course, the internet is filled with useful information and you should look up all the research you can about turtles prior finding turtles and terrapins for sale. If you are buying one from a pet store you can ask the pet specialist or the reptile specialist what kinds they have and what they’d recommend for you. There are also many books available on the subject that can teach you all that you ever wanted to know about having a turtle as a pet.


Learn to care for your turtle before buying it

In order to setup its habitat properly it’s important to know what type of turtle it is. You need to buy an aquarium (not a terranium). Build up one side of the aquarium with sea stones to create a basking surface, preferably with flat stones so that the turtle can actually use it comfortably.

Is a turtle the right pet for you?


Fill the tank with water but only just enough so that the nostrils of the turtle are just slightly above water level when they stand on their hind legs. Larger turtles can be in deeper water. Your tank will also need an ultraviolet lamp centered on the basking rock. A filter is also needed but rated for small animals such as newts.

Besides pet stores you can also consider private breeders or those listed on reptile discussion forums. These are usually people who know more about reptiles and turtle care than the average pet shop employee. They will also be able to tell you what you specifically need to care for them.
